We collect non-perishable foods every week at Advent in support of the West Chester Food Cupboard, because as they say "No one should go hungry!" Every year Advent members donate over 3,000 pounds to this organization, which serves 500 households or about 1,600 individuals every month. Furthermore, Advent members are encouraged to donate gift cards or perishable items directly to the center and they may also donate their time. This ministry helps to support the Domestic Violence Center of Chester County (DVCCC) in its mission to help victims of domestic violence become survivors. Volunteers set up and decorate a Christmas tree (in July) with envelopes for donations to DVCCC. The ministry coordinators publicize the events, seek donations from the quilting group to raffle, coordinate a breakfast that takes place on the last Sunday of July during the 9 AM worship service, and request bakers to donate baked goods and crafts to sell at the breakfast and tally the results of the fund raising events. At the service a speaker from DVCCC makes a short presentation and shares ways people can become involved to support this mission. Fund-raising experience is always welcome. In each of the past two years, Advent has raised over $4,000, including matching funds from Thrivent Financial for Lutherans, to support the work of DVCCC.

The Salvation Army in West Chester provides dinner for 30 or so people every night. Advent does one meal per month on the third Monday of every month. This ministry needs people willing to provide and cook food. Inexperienced volunteers can be paired with people that have experience in preparing meals for large numbers of people. For more information about the meals contact Erna Graham, Phone number (610) 431-6229.

Quilts are prayerfully produced for children to be baptized, for members with serious illnesses and for those moving to assisted living, hospices, or the Veterans Hospital. Items used in church service are repaired. Banners, baptismal napkins, communion linens, Christmas bags, pot holders and pillowcases are also prepared. The group meets once a month on the 2nd Friday from 9 a.m. to noon, but quilters can also donate time worked at home. Members of Advent also crochet prayer shawls. Even non-quilters are welcome to attend. For more information about the quilting activities at Advent. led by Mary Alice James, please contact the church office.
